Making Fire

Makin' fire!!

Today we created fire in Glass & Light (neon) class. Instead of striking flints together, we struck old metal files on various rocks that Fred has been collecting over the years. The task was to strike an amber onto a charcoaled square of t-shirt cotton that rested in crumpled newspaper. Nobody could leave class until they've created fire. For some, it was almost an impossible task. Everyone looked like cave people hacking away with their files and rocks.

We had this happen 20+ times in the studio. :)
(Notice the winter jacket made of synthetics in the corner? What a hazard! Hahaha!)

And yesterday night, while walking home from studio, I saw this small tree from the corner of my eye. I honestly thought it was a glass sculpture piece. It had these amazing icicles hanging from its limbs that could've been glass—glass that was hot poured onto the branches.

that sounds like a really great skill. if you are in the middle of the forest with very basic supplies, not only can you cook food, but make art!
