Making Fire

Makin' fire!!

Today we created fire in Glass & Light (neon) class. Instead of striking flints together, we struck old metal files on various rocks that Fred has been collecting over the years. The task was to strike an amber onto a charcoaled square of t-shirt cotton that rested in crumpled newspaper. Nobody could leave class until they've created fire. For some, it was almost an impossible task. Everyone looked like cave people hacking away with their files and rocks.

We had this happen 20+ times in the studio. :)
(Notice the winter jacket made of synthetics in the corner? What a hazard! Hahaha!)

And yesterday night, while walking home from studio, I saw this small tree from the corner of my eye. I honestly thought it was a glass sculpture piece. It had these amazing icicles hanging from its limbs that could've been glass—glass that was hot poured onto the branches.

Come and Eat Food!

...Oh! And Look At Some Art!!

3/6 Show posters

Last weekend, Lauren Berman, Justin Catron, Janice Larko, and I had a group show in Turner Student Gallery. We didn't have a theme, but we all agreed that one of the main reasons why students come to the Turner openings is because of the food. People usually crowd outside of the gallery, mowing down on food, not giving any mind the work that is displayedinside the gallery. So we decided roll in a table and serve our food inside the gallery.

Lauren showed a collection of her brandings on wood, along with several glass pieces. Justin scared and irritated several people with his metal sci-fi "spider" that loudly vibrated when cued on by a motion detector. Janice displayed a tiled composition of individual wax shapes on the wall. As for me, since several people were wondering whether there were going to be cats in the show because of the of posters I created, I decided to arrange all the food we had bought for the show into two cat faces. People wondered where my piece was, and I just pointed at the food. :)

Glass Art Society Show

"The Glass Art Society is an international non-profit organization founded in 1971 whose purpose is to encourage excellence, to advance education, to promote the appreciation and development of the glass arts, and to support the worldwide community of artists who work with glass."

Two weeks ago, I showed a piece for "Glass Art Society: Alfred Members" at Turner Student Gallery. There were 14 people in the show and it was such a hassle to get everyone together to put up work. It turned out fine, of course, and I even made the event poster. The highlight was Andrew's outdoor performance piece, where glass was ladled out of the hot shop, rushed into the elevator, and then poured into a steel mold outside. We handed out several forks so that our guests could roast marshmallows and make smores. It was delicious!

Ready to pour into the mold.

This stuff is mad heavy. I once tried to ladle one of these and I nearly hit the ground and couldn't get up.

YUM!!

Here is the piece I showed in the corner of the gallery.
